The more you know...

One of the most important thing I’ve done in my journey to becoming a Super Mom is knowing my rights and my child’s. It’s important to learn about paternity, custody, visitation, child support, protection, among other things, especially if you find yourself in a situation where your partner, or ex-partner, wants to impose control over you and your child(ren). These steps are a good way to start.

1. Know the Law.

Every state has different laws. That’s why it’s important to be familiar with the laws of your state, and the state where the child resides. The best way to start becoming acquainted is by getting the consolidated laws in the Family Court Act in your state. This will be YOUR BIBLE to knowing your rights and your child’s. You can purchase most copies online, or look up the laws online, although a physical copy comes handy to have it with you to make notes and bring with you. It’s not as painful as it sounds, and will actually make you feel more empowered.

2. Consult an Attorney.

Once you’ve read the laws in your state, make notes and consult with a professional who can answer your questions. It is important to do this after you’re acquainted with the laws so that you are informed about your options, ask the right questions, and make wise decisions. It’s also the best use of your time when speaking with an attorney. If you can’t afford an attorney, the Court can appoint one for you in most cases, with some exceptions. You won’t always need an attorney, but it is recommended.

3. Breathe.

Yes, take a deep breath. Legal matters can be intense, and it’s normal to get emotional. However, this hardly ever pays off in Court and clouds your judgment. Take a break, go for a walk, write in your blog, talk to other Super Moms who want to share their experience, and remember: you have rights. Matters like litigation can take a long time to resolve, so make sure you have a go-to for peace of mind. Eventually, it will all be over before you realize.

Take Action!

We’re working on law reforms to make sure women’s rights are reinforced. As of now, most laws make significant stipulations about single mothers which interfere with the enforcement of equal rights between men and women. As a result, single mothers do not receive the justice and relief they deserve. WE NEED YOU! Take a look at our initiatives, and join a cause!
